September is Healthy Aging Month, and it’s a great time to focus on the positive aspects of growing older. The annual observance month encourages older adults to improve their physical, mental, social and financial wellbeing – leading to a more active, vibrant lifestyle.

However, one thing that can seriously hinder an active lifestyle this fall – is the flu.

According to the CDC, people 65 years and older experience flu symptoms of greater severity than younger adults. Additionally, seniors are at a greater risk of developing life-threatening complications from the flu, as immune defenses become weaker with age. The best way to protect yourself, is to get your flu shot every year.

In Georgia, the senior population immunization rates are among the lowest in the nation. And, senior minorities and those living in rural areas are even less likely to be up-to-date on their vaccinations.

Alliant Quality, a division of Alliant Health Solutions, is working to improve immunization rates among Georgia seniors. We are collaborating with an advisory board to develop and implement an immunization intervention plan, we recruited 290 health providers to participate in our immunization improvement initiative, and we are providing ongoing technical assistance and immunization best practices education to the participating provider group.

Prioritizing your health is an integral part of enjoying this stage of life to the fullest. And, with the flu season quickly approaching, scheduling your flu vaccination appointment today is a great way to kick off Healthy Aging Month!
