We are exited to announce that Loy D. Cowart III, MD, FAAFP, has joined the Alliant family! Learn more about Dr. Cowart, his role as chief medical officer of Medicaid and his vision for the team.

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I was raised in south Georgia, and graduated from the University of Georgia Honors Program with a B.S. in biology. I attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and completed a family medicine residency in South Carolina, where I served as chief resident. During my 22-year practice career, I have had the opportunity to provide care in my private practice, as well as inpatient medicine, nursing homes, obstetrics and emergency medicine – in small, rural communities.

Did you always want to become a physician? And why did you choose to practice in rural settings?

My decision to enter medicine was influenced by my role model and physician in the rural community where I was raised. He began seeing me at the age of nine, and later served as a preceptor during one of my medical school rotations. His role in my life, as well as the opportunity to serve others, is what drew me to medicine. Because I grew up in a rural community, I knew I wanted to return to this setting as a practicing physician.

The healthcare needs of patients living in rural areas are different from those in urban areas, and rural areas often lack access to care. This makes practicing medicine in a rural community so unique and meaningful. I’ve had the opportunity to provide care to five generations of families. I also served as the medical director for the Hearts and Hands Clinic, which was established to provide care to uninsured patients in Bulloch County, Georgia. It has been a remarkable experience to provide care to these patients – they are all very special and appreciative. It’s been an honor to serve them.

As the new chief medical officer of Medicaid at Alliant Health Solutions, what will be your main responsibilities?

In my new role, I will provide clinical guidance for a great, high-skilled group of people. I will work to help them as they continue to meet the needs of patients and Medicaid providers, ensuring patients get the appropriate care in a timely manner. The world of health care is constantly changing. It will be vital for us to adapt to these changes and to be prepared to identify innovative solutions to challenges that arise – both now and in the future.

Why did you decide to join the Alliant team, and what excites you most about working here?

My decision to join Alliant Health Solutions was directly related to its mission and goals. The opportunity to work with a dedicated, professional group of people who are driven to improve the quality of health care was and is very important to me. It’s most exciting to be a part of a team with these goals, as the health of our citizens is dependent upon their access to quality health care.
